Rust and Sparkle: Small Business Spotlight

 Rust and Sparkle

Gifts, Home Decor, Jewelry & More

Rust and Sparkle is a treasure box full of the most intricate items in the heart of Royersford, PA.   These mother-daughter duos gather together as a family outside the store and extend their knowledge of gifts and home decor to the community within their store.  One step into their shop and you will quickly realize this is truly a unique find full of very fun loving women.

Keep reading to find out what Cindy, Natalie, Laurie, and Madeline, co-owners of Rust and Sparkle, and I chatted about below.

Q&A:

Q: How did Rust and Sparkle get started?

A: Crafting and making have always been a part of the family, whether it’s a Friday night activity or a family holiday.  The girls in the family were always making something.  When a building became available in Royersford, Cindy Scherer, Lauri Sell, and Natalie Dobry could see a dream they had come to life!  Cindy Scherer, long time Pottstgrove art teacher, previously owned a store in Pottstown and has always been selling her hand-painted and hand beaded jewelry to friends and family.  Her daughter, Natalie Dobry also an art teacher, and mom to four adorable kids have a knack for decorating and styling.  Laurie Sell is an occupational therapist by day and crafter by night.  A recent addition following graduating from Parsons is Madeline Sell.  With all their talents combined, they opened Rust and Sparkle in November of 2016.

Q: What products or services do you sell?

A: We sell an assortment of gifts, home decor, jewelry and more that include: handmade jewelry with sterling silver and gold fills, antiques, boutique clothing, accessories, handmade soaps, children clothing, and more.  We also offer our knowledge as teachers and mend any jewelry that was handmade.  Everything is for sale, from the lighting to the refinished furniture, displays, fixtures, etc.  Sometimes it’s even the earrings off of our ears!  And please knock something over, unless you do you haven’t looked hard enough.

Q: What are your business passions/interests?

A: Our passions include hand making items, up-cycling vintage furniture, and supporting other local artists that give women a unique and fun place to shop.

Q: What do customers take away from your business?

A: When people come in they always say, “You really have everything.”  We are here to give you a personal service and offer recommendations and decorating tips.  There is always something new here to go through.

Q: Can you describe your customers?

A: They are a lot like us, a mother and a daughter or your two friends coming in for a shopping trip.  We also get a lot of creatives who enjoy coming in to look for unique items like wedding planners and baby photographers.  Our customers are people who value high-quality artistic and sometimes quirky items.

Q: What organizations are you a part of?

A: We support the Tierra L. Dobry Foundation and donate to local schools and events as much as we can.

Q: Are there any other passions you have?

A: As a family and group of women, our tradition is to gather and make.  Even when we go away on vacations we will set up a still life and will paint or make cute earrings.  We always walk away with something great!

Q: If your business were a book, song, or famous artwork, what would it be and why?

A: We would be Mary Cassatt.  She’s a famous impressionistic artist who was known for being a woman amongst men in the impressionist period.

Q: What is your favorite food item?

A: We love the iced coffee from our neighbors, Brewed Awakenings!  We get it every weekend.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: “If you wait for perfect conditions, you’ll never get it done.” & “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.'” –  Erma Bombeck
