Piccolo Amore is hard to miss with its bright pink sign and gorgeously displayed windows on the main street of Trappe. I first came across this boutique store after relentlessly trying to find the perfect outfit for my own family portraits. I’m not a big fan of shopping for myself, but with the help of Meghan at Piccolo Amore, we were able to find exactly what I was looking for. I would have never tried on what Meghan suggested, but am so glad I did because I ended up loving what she chose and felt more beautiful than I had in years. See for yourself how clothing from Piccolo set the mood for our mountaintop portrait session here.
One of the first questions I get asked after scheduling a portrait session is, “What do I wear?!” I love getting asked this question because what you wear sets the mood for the entire portrait session and the story you want to tell. Piccolo Amore has become one of those places that I direct all my clients to. Not only do they have a wide spread of beautiful textures and clothing, they are friendly and willing to take that extra step in helping you find clothing that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
Meghan, the owner of Piccolo, graduated from FIT and spent two years in NYC and another two years in Italy. The name of the boutique, “Piccolo Amore,” means “Tiny Love.” Meghan said, “It was such a huge part of my life.” Piccolo Amore opened its doors in May 2015 but the business began in 2013 in the basement of Meghan’s parent’s home. At the beginning, Meghan was cutting, sewing, printmaking, and making more things than buying and selling. So many of her personal friends would come to her house wanting something created for them until her parents finally suggested that she needed a bigger space. She soon discovered a need for women seeking to find clothing that made them feel beautiful (and in her own words “a little badass.”).
Q: Is there something your business is known for?
A: “Our customer service. When I have more time, I do alterations or pin the item for a client so they can get alterations. We also just started a new texting number, so that clients can screenshot it and send it to the store. Sending things if we don’t necessarily have it online, we will still go out of our way to purchase it. We like to be accommodating.”
Q: What is your style?
A: “I’m definitely a bit more bohemian but I also like a lot of leather rocker jacket. I have studded boots. I feel like our style changes and we have a lot of different items. That’s what sets us apart. We’re not just boho queen with flowers in your hair and crochet shoes. We have all different types. If you want to make it more bohemian we can do that too with different pieces. We’re a little girly, a little boho, and a little badass.”
Q: What is something you want your clients to take away?
A: “The goal is for everyone to feel fabulous and love what they’re wearing. And we’re honest. If someone says, ‘You have to be honest, does this look good on me?’ I’m like, ‘Well yeah because first off, if you’re buying that and if you look like crap and you’re telling people that we sold that to you. I want us to do our best to dress you.’ And I feel like especially being a young woman growing up, and now with social media with all these body image issues, we all suffer from it and I want people to feel good. So any woman, confident woman, not confident woman, a woman with kids or without kids, someone who enjoys fashion as much as we do and wants to be creative with their style – not necessarily with just jeans and t-shirts, or if they do we have fun accessories. In New York, we found this cool unique feather bib. Just something a little different but makes you feel like, ‘yeah I look good today.'”
Q: Is there any fun tidbits about your business?
A: “Drake is our office pet. I wanted to walk rescues, mostly mutts, and we walked Drake for nine months. After we fostered him for a weekend, the rest was history.”
Q: Do you have any tips for someone planning a photo session?
A: “If they are looking for something, come up and ask us if you’re really shy. We are really not the type of business that will greet you, ask if you need anything, and if they say ‘no’ (because they are looking) we will let you look around. And if you still don’t ask, we don’t know that you need help or not. We don’t want to be annoying and ask you every five minutes. We’re not that type of boutique or store. So in general, I would say ‘this is what I’m doing’ and the more information they give us would be great. Depending on what you’re wearing we can give you tips, like with the skirt if you’re shorter we have these cool knot techniques, tucking, sewing. It’s more like once we figure out what, then we can give you more tricks. I can take a look around and come up with ideas if you want it.”
Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: “If you wanna be somebody, if you wanna go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention.” – Sister Act 2
